11 More Insane Alternative Versions Of Superman You Won't Believe

Superman: The Dark Side
DC Comics

This universe’s Superman isn’t Kal-El at all, but instead an incredibly dark re-imagining of the Last Son of Krypton's origins. In this version of Krypton, long before its destruction, a young Kryptonian child known as Dru-Zod began to show psychopathic tendencies, culminating in Zod releasing a virus that kills dozens. For this, the boy was sentenced to the Phantom Zone as he showed no remorse for his actions and so never became the Zod that we all know him to be.

Cut to Earth, the 1940s, and the American government were hurriedly trying to work on a teleportation project. The project testing failed to create any portals but somehow opened a hole in the Phantom Zone, culminating in the release of the young Dru-Zod. Taken in by the government, the child seemingly had no recollection of his past - a ruse on his behalf, made complete by his pretend childlike persona.

The 'scared young boy' was sent to a Kansas farm to be raised under heavy supervision by the American government, and was given the name of Clark Kent. As he grew older his powers developed but as he was still hiding his true self the sociopathic Dru-Zod suppressed the full extent of his abilities to hide them from the government. After discovering this, the government recruited him to become a spy for the CIA.

This Clark Kent/Dru-Zod was given the code name 'Super-Man' for missions. On operations, Super-Man also worked alongside the universe’s Bruce Wayne, who operated under the name “The Bat.”

This Super-Man had no contact with Superman’s common weakness, Kryptonite. Instead, this version faced one of his lesser known weaknesses, namely nuclear energy. Zod first discovered this weakness when tasked with stopping the Russian nuclear weapons program, a task he ultimately failed to complete, because of the late discovery.
