11 Reasons You're Wrong About Marvel Legacy

5. A New Day For Spider-Man

Marvel Comics

We're about seven or so years into Dan Slott's run on Spider-Man, and, while it's undoubtedly had its highs, it's about time we got to see some other writers get a shot at the character.

That's where the Spectacular Spider-Man comes in. Written by Chip Zdarsky, the series debuted to a strong reception back in June, and things look set to continue come Legacy, hopefully with more appearances by Johnny Storm. The best thing about it is, however, that Parker will be on bad terms with the NYPD once more, with the series returning the character to his vigilante roots. Some might mark this as a regressive move, but Zdarsky has a brilliant track-record, and his style lends itself well to a Parker-oriented book (as has been the case thus far).

Peter David, one of Marvel's most famous and indeed greatest talents, will also be returning to the character, albeit his clone, in Scarlet Spider. Legacy will necessitate a change in wardrobe for the blond-haired wall-crawler, however, with the character reverting to his traditional denim-hoodie look and not... whatever the suit he rocked earlier on was.

On top of titles like Venom and Silver Sable, Marvel are returning the web-slinger to a more familiar place in the character's history, and while Slott will be free to do his own thing in the main Spider-Man book, it's great to see other writers really getting stuck into some of the hero's most beloved supporting characters.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
