For a book about a group of garishly costumed supervillains who are working black ops missions for a shady government official, the Suicide Squad has always had a good grasp of politics, corruption and the implications of both. It was a pretty serious read, despite one of its main characters being a painfully stereotypical Australian larrikin wearing pyjamas with little boomerangs on them. The first issue of Ostranders run sets the tone immediately with a scene that can only be described as the No Russian of comic books. Except that this airport massacre features Manticore, a genetically altered villain who looks likeBlanka from Street Fighter with a grenade launcher in his tail. Which you could actually get in Call of Duty if you were willing to pay $25 for the DLC. The Jihad, super powered terrorists for hire, invade an airport in order to get to Air Force One, merrily slaughtering innocents along the way. Theres a digital genie called Djinn and assassin with a sword that he can turn on fire at will because he is the luckiest man ever. All of this death and destruction takes place within one minute and seven seconds. I dare you to try and beat that time in your next airport massacre. What makes it even crazier is that this was an airport made to look like it was American, so that the Jihad could practice their real mission. Except that, instead of actors, actual civilians were used because authenticity is important. This is the first comic-book related incident featuring a fake set to nearly kill more people than the Spider-Man musical.
