12 Greatest Marvel Superheroes Of All Time

7. Thor

Marvel Universe Alex Ross
Marvel Comics

Thor is definitely one of Marvel's most interesting characters. He made his first appearance back in 1962's Journey Into Mystery #83 thanks to Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. What made him interesting was that he was the literal God of Thunder from Norse Mythology... but not quite.

What Marvel created was an entire mythology all of their own, a race of aliens akin to the Norse Gods, and a character whose lasting legacy remains popular to this day.

Over the years, Thor has changed quite a bit in the comics. He has been rebooted, retconned, transferred to other characters, and the mantle was even passed onto Jane Foster. Throughout all of these changes, Thor Odinson remains in one form or another (Unworthy or otherwise) and the fans couldn't be happier.

Thor saw a rise in popularity thanks to his depiction on the silver screen, though fans were skeptical Marvel Studios could pull off a successful adaptation of Thor, but the studio surprised us all. The success of the film(s) and Thor's enduring popularity in the comics is a testament to the fantastic writers who have taken up the task of bringing an unusual, albeit funny, strong, and unique character to life.
