12 Most Iconic Battles In Comics

5. Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin

From: Amazing Spider-Man #121-122

Prior to one of the most famous storylines in comic book history in €œThe Night Gwen Stacy Died,€ Spider-Man and Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, were sworn enemies who each knew the other€™'s secret identities. Spider-Man had defeated Osborn on countless occasions, but the madman kept coming back for more until he eventually took things a step too far when he threw Spider-Man/Peter Parker€™'s girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, off a bridge and killed her.

In the immediate aftermath of Gwen€™'s death, Spider-Man swears vengeance and appears intent on killing Osborn. But once Spidey has the Goblin on the ropes and has an opening to follow through on his justifiable blood lust, he stays true to his moral code of €œwith great power, there must also come great responsibility,€ and resists the urge to kill Osborn.

Still, the Goblin has one more trick up his sleeve. As he lays defeated, he secretly summons his Goblin Glider in an attempt to impale Spider-man. By using his Spider-Sense, Spidey dodges the vehicle and it instead impales Osborn, killing him (the Goblin'€™s death would later be reversed via retcon).

In the comics, the showdown in Amazing Spider-Man #121-122 is a constant talking point, where Norman still carries the scars of that night.
