12 Superpowers You Didn’t Know Spider-Man Had

8. Astral Projection

During J. Michael Straczynski's incredible run on the web slinger, Spidey's origin story got a slight ret-con. Now, depending on the reader's perspective, this move either answered a lot of questions, or managed to make even less sense than the original tale.

In Amazing Spider-Man #30, Spidey meets Ezekiel. Ezekiel is an unassuming man with a surprising secret, he also has spider-powers. His story is a long one (that you should definitely follow), but he plants a very important question. Was it the radiation that gave the spider it's powers, or was the spider trying to transfer its power before the radiation killed it?

As is usually the case, Dr Strange was on hand to solve this mystery. In Amazing Spider-Man #40, Spidey meets a villain he cannot defeat, or even land a punch on. It turns out that the villain had access to the Astral Plane and was able to commit crimes without actually being at the scene.

To defeat him, Strange gave Spidey the ability to access the Astral Plane. Unsurprisingly, after defeating The Shade, Peter ignored Strange's advice and went exploring the Astral Plane. Following a strange energy, he stumbles across a giant spider-like creature who explains that he is "of us and not of us", before blasting him back to reality.
