Considering Ant-Man can talk to and control ants, it never quite made sense that Peter Parker couldn't do the same thing. Granted Hank Pym is far more experienced, someone of Peter's intelligence should be capable of creating a similar technology, surely?

However, there have been times where Spidey was able to talk to actual spiders. During 'The Other' storyline, Peter was absolutely destroyed by Morlun. He was able to defeat the vampire on his deathbed in order to save MJ, but died shortly after biting a chunk out of the villain's neck. However, that wasn't the end of Peter Parker.

Somehow, he managed to leave his former body behind and cocooned himself under the Brooklyn Bridge. When he emerged, he had a multitude of new powers including the ability to talk to spiders. Despite the exciting rebirth, his newer powers have been mostly ignored since. Although Kaine Parker was also able to communicate with the creatures during his time as the Scarlet Spider.
