Batman's Signature Gadget Is Born Aside from the Bat-Suit itself, Batman's grapnel gun is arguably his most important, and his most iconic, piece of tech that he carries. Making its debut in Batman Issue #22 in 2013, Snyder's story shows a young Bruce Wayne in heated discussion with Alfred over how the Batman is taking over in the shadows while the character of Bruce Wayne suffers, and so, consequently, does the Wayne family name. The conversation ends with Alfred smacking Bruce, ashamed of him for how he is treating the Wayne legacy, and Bruce then firing the grapnel into a brick wall, and pulling it to the ground. This page is great symbolism by both Snyder and Capullo, with the descent of the Wayne family name at issue as Batman pulls the wall off it's foundation, having it crumble in ruin. And it gives the reader an inside look behind the scenes early on in Bruce's journey after coming home. We see him working through both his personal issues with Alfred, and also working out the kinks in his gear. We always take for granted that Batman has the grapnel gun, but it's fun to see it come to life on the page.
