Even though the nineties are regarded as something of a dark period for the medium, owing to the fact that everything was fairly edgy and a litany of terrible events plagued the industry landscape, they weren't exactly a financially barren spot for either Marvel or DC.

In fact, the most amount of comics ordered in a single month came in the April of 1997 (according to Comichron), where a grand total of 9,340,000 issues from Diamond's Top 300 made their way to retailers up and down the North American market.

The top five comics ordered that month were Uncanny X-Men #345, plain old X-Men #65, Fantastic Four #8, Spawn #61 and Wolverine #114 - all Marvel works save for Spawn, which falls under the Image Comics umbrella. A nineties top five if there ever was one.
