Maxwell Lord is hailed as one of the greatest masterminds on Earth, something helped by the fact that he can control the minds of others. Despite working with the Justice League, he's only ever done so for his own nefarious means, manipulating them for his own purposes as he looked to gain even more power. At the end of the day, he's just a horrible egomaniac, but his abilities also make him a deadly force.

That became evident when the League finally unearthed his plans. After shooting Blue Beetle in cold blood, he used his mind control powers to pit Superman against Wonder Woman in a fight which would have inevitably left one or both of them dead.
