15 Little Known Facts About The Green Lantern Corps

1. The True Purpose of The Oath

Black Canary Green Lantern
DC Comics

"In brightest day, in blackest night. No evil shall escape my sight. For those who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's might!"

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic tropes in all stories prominently featuring a Green Lantern, the Corps' oath has changed over the years but has still retained its affirmation of conquering evil/fear.

Despite its universal summary of the Corps' ethos, the oath's specifics have varied, especially across the numerous species that constitute the intergalactic system. Their native tongues have different linguistic structures and cultural contexts behind them and as a result, their versions of the oath are wildly different in flow but still retain its meaning.

Furthermore, the oath does not actually recharge the ring but serves as a means of reflection for the Lantern on their cause.
