3. League Of Extraordinary Buggery

Alan Moore loves sodomy. That's not a piece of scandalous gossip on the eccentric, bearded writer's bedroom habits - we can but speculate on what happens in deepest, darkest Northampton - but more a trend that comes up in a surprising amount of his most celebrated work, including the deconstructionist superhero classic Watchmen and most distressingly in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

A historical take on a superteam formed in the Victorian era, with a membership comprised of fictional characters from the era that are in the public domain, Moore nonetheless managed to shoehorn some buggery into a story set in an infamously chaste time period. Actually there's a lot of inappropriate couplings within the pages of League of Extraordinary Gentleman, including the repeated graphic love scenes between elderly adventurer Allan Quatermain and eternally younger vampire woman Mina Murray. But it's the (pun not in any way intended) climactic scene of the second book that's his piece de resistance when it comes to sodomy.

It transpires that the Invisible Man has been conspiring against the team, colluding with their War of the Worlds-inspired Martian enemies, a scheme which is uncovered by colleague Dr Jekyll in Mr Hyde mode. Enraged by his supposed friend's betrayal, the Hulk-like Hyde beats the Invisible Man to a pulp and then rapes him for good measure. Which is either a bravura twist on a classic piece of literature or totally inappropriate, depending on your point of view.
