The integral signifier of the Starman dynasty, the Cosmic Staff was first used and created by the first Starman Ted Knight, who based its design on his first weapon, the Gravity Rod. Over the generations, it was passed down from one Starman to the next until it wound up where it is today, in the hands of Courtney Whitmore, a.k.a. Stargirl.

The staff is constantly absorbing and storing celestial energy which its user can then convert into a more malleable power set. Wielders can control their personal gravity, fly at jet speeds, levitate nearby objects, create force fields and projections, manipulate kinetic energy, and shot cosmic blasts. The staff will also be drawn to whoever it has most recently imprinted itself on, meaning that Stargirl can call it to herself at will.

Additionally, the staff provides a huge defensive buff, automatically shielding its user with a cosmic aura that protects against vacuums, most forms of energy blasts, and even the extreme temperatures of space and alien planets. Even when its defenses fail, the staff is predisposed to protect its user. It can become warm enough to melt through steel and keep its user from freezing, and its cosmic defenses have even proven effective against Kryptonians.
