7. He's Got Real Weaknesses

It says a lot about a hero whose powers are also his weakness. It's impossible to count just how many times Daredevil's been defeated or pained because of an ill-placed screech, gunshot, or powerful stench. But the fact is, Daredevil can be beaten, which is something that, as a reader, I like a lot more than if I had to experience it myself. There's this juvenile idea that one's favorite hero or role model should be the absolute best at everything, otherwise, they have no business being your hero. But how much further from the truth can you get? When Daredevil is inches away from death, I'm much closer to the story than I am if he's beating the crap out of thirty ninjas at the same time. His sweeping victories are entertaining to watch, but those moments where defeat is all but imminent--no, not just imminent, but plausible, that's when I feel like I'm investing my time and attention into something truly worthwhile. Some of Daredevil's finest moments come in his moments of weakness, which is something that goes pretty unseen by mainstream comics. Batman isn't often defeated by his martial arts or powers of deduction, Spider-Man isn't often taken out because he can climb walls, and Superman's laser-vision never causes his head to explode. But the very same frequency that can lead Daredevil to a crime scene can also victimize him into a hellish paralysis.
