Lobo is more of a bounty hunter than an assassin, but his serious cool image, sadistic techniques and use of seriously powerful weapons makes him a worthy mercenary. An alien, Lobo was initially created as DC's answer to gnarly badass 1990s Marvel anti-heroes like Wolverine, Gambit and The Punisher, but he took off and became one of the franchise's most popular figures. With a name that translates to "he who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it", an arrogant persona and an insatiable love for destruction and murder, it's clear why Lobo is feared by DC heroes and beloved by fans. He is immensely powerful, loves animals and maintains a strict code of conduct; sticking meticulously to the wording of any contracts that he takes on, even to a fault. The odd thing about Lobo is that, despite his menacing nature, he is actually a pretty humorous character. He has been a priest and a rock star and has inadvertently killed almost every friend that he has ever made. Maybe this humorous touch - making him a bit like a less self-conscious and more vicious Deadpool - is what has brought him such huge popularity in the largely serious contemporary DC universe.
