20 Best Comic Covers Of 2014

16. Moon Knight #3 By Declan Shalvey

Moon Knight is not a great character. At least, he's one of Marvel's more C-list superheroes, whose continued return to publication for very short spells is probably attributed to a mostly inexplicable cult fandom amongst both readers and creators alike. The last all-star team to try an bring back his solo book was Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch. And they could barely make it past twelve issues with their slightly suspect take on a Pharaoh-obsessed vigilante with mental health issues. All the more surprising, then, when Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey decided to give Marc Spector another try with a much more non-traditional spin this year.
Fan favourite writer Ellis was the main draw to the book, but it was Declan Shalvey in concert with colourist Jordie Bellaire that really made the book stand out. The pair provided a stark, sleek and shadow-drenched style throughout the short seven-issue run they shared and brought a similarly iconic and inventive look to the covers, too. The third issue saw Spector donning an alternate costume with a glider and talking to his dead dad, who had a bird skull for a head. All those abstract concepts come together with this cover, which also reflects the green colour scheme of the punk ghosts he fought inside (true story).
