12. Sea Monkeys
The reality of Sea Monkeys was clearly never going to live up to the reality. They've been sold since in actual shops and the like, where the scam is much more apparent very quickly (probably because trading standards laws have caught up to the original manufacturers). Before kids had the chance to actually closely interrogate the claims of frolicsome pets that swim, stunt and play games with each other, and realise that the anthropomorphic fish people in the illustration were actually microscopic frozen sea creatures, they just lost out on $1.25.
