Picking up where Kevin Smith left on in the early 2000s, writer Brian Michael Bendis took Daredevil back to the dark and gritty stories which had made him so popular in the 1980s when Frank Miller was in charge. What followed was a superb run which saw Matt Murdock put through the wringer in a major way as his mental state became more and more fragile. This ultimately culminated in an unmasked Daredevil savagely beating The Kingpin in front of his minions, and then declaring himself New York City's new Kingpin. While this helped Hell's Kitchen in the short term, it put the hero on the FBI's radar in a big way, and his actions this night were what led to Matt ending up having a breakdown and being arrested.
