Captain America came along at a perfect time. With World War II raging, people needed a hero they could get behind and escape their real-life troubles with, and who better for that than an emblem of justice? The now iconic cover of Captain America Comics #1 (published in 1941) featured the attention grabbing image of the patriotic superhero punching Adolf Hitler square in the jaw. Millions of copies of the comic book sold, but the controversy it created let to those at Timely Comics requiring police protection for weeks after it was published.
