4. The Gay Green Lantern

When DC Comics decided to reintroduce Alan Scott in their rebooted "New 52" universe, they made some major changes to the character. By far the biggest was the fact that he was now an openly gay man. You wouldn't think that such a change would be a big deal in 2012, but the internet blew up over the fact that 72 years after being created, the original Green Lantern was no longer straight. His sexuality had never played a major role in any stories, but it still stirred up a lot of controversy at the time.
