20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About Marvel

3. George R. R. Martin Was A Regular Mail-In Writer

Fantastic Four George Rr Martin Letter
Marvel Comics

All the way back in 1963, an enterprising young writer has his letter appear in the back of Fantastic Four #17, praising the comic as one of the best comics ever. This young writer was none other than a 14-year-old George R. Martin, sporting only one R at the time.

Calling the comic things like “greater than great” and “absolutely stupendous” it’s hard to tell if Martin was just a nerdy young fan or the sassiest teenager around. He maintains a general appreciation for the Fantastic Four only to then point out plot flaws like having the president leave a meeting on global security so that he could tuck his daughter into bed.

Regardless of his opinions, the letters were well put together and others took notice. And since his address was published with the letter, other fans soon started sending him fanzines. Upon reading these, Martin realized he could probably write them himself and thus a young career was born.
