Magneto is actually something of an anomaly in the X-Men's rogues gallery, where psychic powers are usually the most devastating abilities their enemies can wield. The Shadow King is a prime example of that, beginning life as a telepath of the highest order who worked with Hydra leader Baron Von Strucker to destabilise WWII-era Egypt.

Then he went fishing in a deeper psychic pond than usual and somehow, whilst traversing the astral plane, the telepath found himself possessed by the Shadow King, allegedly a multiversal manifestation of the dark side of the human consciousnesses, spawned by the first nightmare. Which is a pretty badass origin story.

Already probably the most powerful psychic in the Marvel Universe (even more than Jean Grey and Professor X), being boosted by the abilities of a dark god just made the Shadow King even stronger. On the astral plane, he's just about indestructible, and he doesn't really have a proper corporeal form. You can't kill him.
