20 Worst Ever Comic Book Sidekicks

20. War Machine (Iron Man)

First Appearance: Iron Man #118 (January 1979) James Rhodes isn't the most embarrassing sidekick you'll ever meet. Hell, he's not even the lamest. In reality, War Machine's armor is actually pretty cool and his background as a US marine clearly isn't something to be sniffed at, but something about his character just screams RIP-OFF! Most sidekicks possess similar abilities to their partners, but War Machine literally IS Iron Man. Rhodes puts on the armor exactly like Tony Stark yet for some reason, War Machine has never been particularly successful in the few solo ventures he's been given. In the Iron Man movies, they can't even stick to just one actor for Rhodes, swapping out Terrence Howard for Don Cheadle after just one film. Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that Rhodes's personality is about as vacant as his War Machine armor on a day off.
