1. Holiday
Who Is He? "The Long Halloween" indeed. Holiday was a serial killer that spent a year tormenting the citizens of Gotham City, and turning Batman into an obsessed mess. Choosing his targets based on mob affiliation and striking on every holiday in a calendar year, While Holiday never extended his murderous impulses beyond those associated with the mob, the fear he instilled in the city was so great it rivaled even the Joker, who saw Holiday as a threat to his crown of Gotham's greatest villain. Holiday terrorized Gotham for a full year, all with a .22 pistol, a rubber baby bottle nipple, and dollar store holiday decorations. The Holiday Killings also stand out because the story was never resolved in a satisfying way. Specifically because, to the reader at least, Holiday's identity is pretty ambiguous. There's evidence to connect the killings not only to the man who actually took credit for the crimes (Alberto Falcone, pictured above), but also Harvey Dent, the man who would become Two-Face. To further the confusion, the graphic novel ends with a fireside confession by Harvey's wife Gilda Dent claiming that she herself was the original Holiday, and her work was carried on by both Harvey and Alberto throughout the year. Honestly, the further down the rabbit hole we go, the more questions arise.
How Should He Return? Current Batman scribe Scott Snyder has done wonders with long-term storytelling. His inaugural bat-tale was a year long epic called "The Court of Owls" and it was a smashing success. Who better to bring Holiday back into DC canon than the man who has already mastered the long sell? Holiday's identity doesn't need to be a confusing mess like in Loeb and Sale's "The Long Halloween" but the ambiguity is honestly part of the character's charm. Holiday is a mysterious menace that could test Batman's resolve like no other. To be honest it's been a while since the Caped Crusader has been tested like he did that year where holidays were no longer a time of joy, but a time of fear.
