5 Essential Women in the Batman Universe

2. Andrea Beaumont aka The Phantasm

Not quite a villain but not quite a good-guy, Andrea Beaumont was formerly engaged to Bruce Wayne pre-Bat but she now seeks revenge as the Phantasm. Her main appearance was in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, a film based off the Batman Animated Series in the 90s. I€™m putting Andrea on this list because a. Chase Meridian is a stupid name and b. Paul Dini created a fully formed character with drive, humor and darkness. She easily could have been a stand alone character, but she just happened to wander into the Batman world. Andrea and Bruce€™s love story is ultimately tragic but shown in such a way that the audience is able to understand their humanity and what ultimately drove them to seek a life of revenge which helps elevate the stakes in Mask of the Phantasm to an almost Shakespearian level. Through the introduction of Andrea, the audience glimpses another side to Bruce Wayne making the universe all the richer.
