5 Mutants That Have Never Been X-Men (But Should Sign Up)
Reality changing son of Moira MacTaggertAdmittedly I am coming at this after recently reading Ultimate X-Men volume 3: World Tour where Proteus was the son of Professor Xavier. There was a scene near the end of the story where Xavier said to his son that he would rehabilitate him at his school and it got me thinking - what would a Proteus on the good side of the fence be like as a X-Man? Proteus aka Kevin MacTaggert is notable for his power set which allows him to control and rearrange reality as he see fits. There seems to be some limits to his powers (or at least the writers) as he has never taken over the world with a wave of his hand or turned Wolverine into a bunny, but still, he is remarkably strong. The downside to his powers is that he burnt through his body and now has to leap from host to host killing the previous or current host in the process. This power would be immensely useful to any team in the Marvel world. Wolverine's school would be an interesting place for a character like Proteus to try and redeem himself. Of course, you would need a suitable body that could hold his power and a need to be rehabilitated but I've always had an interest in stories about redemption and whether anyone who has committed 'evil' can ever be a force for good. In the X-Men's world it's an important question as many characters such as Magneto and Rogue and also Genesis and Wolverine himself, have been considered bad people. I also think it would make an interesting change to Wolverine to take responsibility for this mutant with unlimited power and try and shape him into a force for good, especially considering their past. Kevin could also interact with Genesis and connect over people's perceived expectations that they will turn out to be bad guys and hurt others. Proteus also acts as a marker and potential proof that mutants need to be watched and I can foresee many arguments with the Avengers and SHIELD about his presence at the school, all of which creating and great potential stories.
