5 Reasons The Fantastic Four Should Stick Around

5. History And Establishment

The single most obvious argument to make in favour of having the Fantastic Four stick around is how well established and known they are. Created at the beginning of the modern Marvel universe along with Spider-Man and the Hulk, the team was shaped by the wacky science of the Silver Age and has remained a cornerstone of the setting since then. There are few major heroes who do not have ties with them in some way, with the group often being paired up with members of the Avengers or sharing histories with the X-Men, and many stories have crossed over between groups; While it's certainly true that superheroes do not know one another at least in passing, the Fantastic Four are intrinsically tied into the very core of that community. They're ultimately just at home working with Beast as they are the Hulk, and can easily be worked into many tales without complications. More than this, they have some of the most iconic villains facing down any hero in the Marvel universe. The average person will be aware that Captain America fights Red Skull, the X-Men beat up Magneto and Apocalypse, but the Fantastic Four? You have Doctor Doom, Galactus, Terrax, Annihilus, Super Skrull and many others. Just about all of who they have a complex relationship with, fighting alongside them as often as they are against them. Killing off the team or closing down their comic entirely would be a move just as damaging as suddenly cutting short a run on one of the key Avengers comics, or cancelling every comic Iron Man is in. Something which would be wasteful, pointless and would fail to make use of the decades of great storytelling and opportunities the group can offer the Marvel universe.
