5 Reasons The Fantastic Four Should Stick Around

4. Ultimate Development

A common criticism of all comics is that nothing ever changes. No matter how big the event, how many characters die or how many times a team will split up, it will return to the status quo. Easily one of the biggest examples disproving this is the Ultimate Fantastic Four. Despite initially playing out as if it were the Four in their teenage years, the comic began to wildly diverge from its 616 counterpart, attempting things which would never be considered elsewhere. The team was disbanded after Reed was shown to have effectively become the Ultimate Doctor Doom, Sue Storm became head researcher at the Baxter Building, Ben Grim's powers evolved causing him to shed his rocky exterior, and Johnny Storm joined the depleted ranks of the X-Men. While Reed has undergone further character development, the writers of the Ultimate universe have shown no sign of the team returning back together any time soon. For better or worse, they are adamantly sticking with these changes and exploring where the team's break-up will lead them, even going so far as to only retain one original member in Ultimate FF. It's a very interesting spin on how comics can develop over the years, and has boldly pushed for new changes and alterations since Ultimatum. Were Marvel to kill off the team and remove them entirely, it would destroy any opportunity to see these interesting elements progress further. This is, of course, also ignoring the whole Future Foundation stuff going on with the 616 team. A movement by Reed Richards to found an organisation to help better prepare the world for the coming future and tackle its growing problems. Something which is one of a few pushes by the Marvel universe to show the characters thinking more about the future. Of course, this isn't to say the Fantastic Four have not undergone some significant changes in this universe either. Just look at how Invisible Woman developed over the decades:
