5 Things You Didn't Know About The Wolverine

5. Wolverine Adopted The Name Logan & Was Introduced As A Villain

Wolverine_Vs_Hulk The name Logan was an odd element of the character for me even as a child; in the movies too, it is just left hanging and never addressed. The comics finally answer the questions that many had in the Wolverine: Origin series, where many of Wolverine€™s secrets were revealed. As discussed earlier, Origin revealed that Wolverine's real name is James Howlett, the son of a wealthy Canadian landowner in the late 19th Century. He was the illegitimate son of his mother and their groundskeeper (called Logan). Little Jimmy was a very sickly child; it wasn't until one night when his father Logan shot John Howlett did his powers manifest. These powers drove James into a berserker rage leading him to murder Logan and accidently his mother. He also stabbed his childhood friend, Rose, killing her in much the same way. This trauma caused James to become Wolverine, a feral beast who lives in the wilderness, and to suppress all of this thanks to his healing factor. James adopted the name Logan soon after these events. On this note, Wolverine's first ever appearance was as a villain for the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk comic #180. He was tasked to assassinate The Hulk for the Canadian government and was intended to be a one-off character. Wolverine was recruited into the X-Men in 1975's 'Giant Sized X-Men' #1 and became part of the official team line-up in 'X-Men' #94.
