4. Wolverine Was Originally An Actual Wolverine
Given that Wolverine shares few common traits with the animal that he is named after, one could be forgiven for wondering just why the characters creators (Len Wein and John Romita Sr.) picked that particular moniker. As it turns out, Len Wein originally conceived Logans origins to be as a mutated wolverine that forcefully evolved into humanoid form. Stan Lee is credited for scrapping this whole idea after rejecting a similar origin for Spider-Woman. Once artist Dave Cockrum and writer Chris Claremont learned of Lees reaction to Spider-Woman, they changed their approach drastically. Think of how different things could have been... On a side note, writer Len Wein apparently narrowed down the name for this new character to "Wolverine" or "Badger." I am not going to lie, that would have been very funny but I doubt it would have had the same lasting effect.
