5 Totally Non-Essential Batman Stories You Should Check Out Anyway

2. Batman: Haunted Knight

The collaboration between Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale that would lead to The Long Halloween and its sequel Dark Victory (one of the definitive depictions of Batman€™s early years in operation). Haunted Knight has two main things going for it; awesomely evocative artwork that shows Batman and his foes as larger-than-life fairy-tale monsters, and a consistently gloomy, unsettlingly eerie atmosphere, with a sense of unreality that dogs Batman as he tussles with some of his signature rogues across a succession of eventful Halloweens. Yet again our intrepid hero is having his physical and mental limits probed by remorseless enemies, a theme that undermines his functional invincibility and makes the serial plots far more dramatically compelling.
