2. Batman: Haunted Knight
The collaboration between Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale that would lead to The Long Halloween and its sequel Dark Victory (one of the definitive depictions of Batmans early years in operation). Haunted Knight has two main things going for it; awesomely evocative artwork that shows Batman and his foes as larger-than-life fairy-tale monsters, and a consistently gloomy, unsettlingly eerie atmosphere, with a sense of unreality that dogs Batman as he tussles with some of his signature rogues across a succession of eventful Halloweens. Yet again our intrepid hero is having his physical and mental limits probed by remorseless enemies, a theme that undermines his functional invincibility and makes the serial plots far more dramatically compelling.
