7 Comic Book Storylines That Would Make Epic Movies
3. Batman R.I.P.
Grant Morrison's twisted, subversive run on Batman was met with some controversy. It was clear that Morrison is a very polarizing type of writer. You either enjoy him, or you don't. There can be no denying, however, that Morrison put his stamp on Batman. One thing that Morrison employed during his run on Batman was the emphasis on the ultimate evil masterminds that were out to get Batman and all of Gotham. And when Morrison started gearing up Batman R.I.P., he began perhaps the most controversial Batman storyline of all time. Within the pages of Batman R.I.P., Morrison resurrected a decades-old character from the lore of the Dark Knight. From Batman #156, known as "Robin Dies At Dawn!", a doctor who was never positively identified was revealed to be Simon Hurt, a figure that apparently had a direct connection with Batman. The mystery of Hurt, his true link to Batman, was shrouded in mystery and subterfuge until he revealed himself to be Thomas Wayne. That's correct, he was Bruce Wayne's father. Though Hurt's claims, including that of orgies and drug parties at Wayne Manor with Alfred and Bruce's parents, were later discredited, it remains a shocking reveal and one of the most talked about stories in all of DC Comics. On-screen, you would certainly benefit from telling a different kind of Batman story. But getting a Batman film with this level of adult content is downright impossible, and Hurt's back story alone would send up red flags over at WB. Even so, it's fun to dream. Moreover, it's joyful to imagine the bright purple and yellow costume of the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh being put to film. Perhaps, then, it's better to presume this would work brilliantly as an entry into the ongoing DC Animated Universe DVD's. Just try to imagine Kevin Conroy and someone like Crispin Glover dueling it out as Batman and Hurt. You're welcome.
