7 Underrated 1980s X-Men Comics You Must Read

1. Fallen Angels #1-8

Marvel Comics / Kerry Gammill

The minute you pick up Fallen Angels, you can tell nothing about this series is normal.

Right off the bat, it wasn't written by one of the typical X-Men writers. Jo Duffy took the reins for this limited series rather than one of the franchise regulars like Claremont or Simonson. It also didn't feature any of the typical premier X-Men characters either. Instead of showcasing stars like Wolverine, Cyclops and Storm, Fallen Angels was primarily about The New Mutants' Sunspot and Warlock. In fact, those heavy-hitter characters weren't even around in supporting roles. Instead, you got Moon-Boy, Devil Dinosaur, and two cybernetically-enhanced lobsters named Bill and Don.

Yes, there's robo-lobsters. By the end, you'll probably be as invested in those lobsters as any other characters too, believe it or not.

That's because Fallen Angels was essentially X-Men without rules. It's just a big playground of all the weird, wild and wonderful things you could do with a franchise like the X-Men if you threw all concern out the window.

That doesn't mean this limited series lacked heart or a focus though. In fact, its story actually hit one of the key themes of the franchise with a startling amount of emotional impact. In other words, it may still have been about a dinosaur on a team with cybernetic lobsters, but it could still tug at the heartstrings just a little too.

Don't let the lack of star power fool you, this series and all of its strangeness is can't-miss stuff.
