6. Paper Girls

Paper Girls
Image Comics

Written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang, this series began in 2015 and concluded recently in July of 2019 with a run of 30 issues.

Set in the 80s and rife with enough pop culture references to make the writers of Stranger Things blush, this super cool science fiction comic features four 12 year old newspaper delivery girls trapped in a war between time travellers.

With a plot as zany and exciting as this one, there are times when the story can get a bit confusing, but as the comic progresses, the creative team behind it manage to tie everything together in a way that feels organic and exciting to the overall narrative.

Brian K. Vaughan is one of the best writers working in comics right now, and his writing, complimented by Cliff Chiang’s own distinct art style, really imparts a tone that just fits the overall style of the comic. The colour pallet alone does a great job at establishing and conveying the sci-fi moments while contrasting them with normal grounded ones.

This comic manages to be fun and exciting, all the while focusing on themes of growth and maturity and how they pertain to the protagonists. Definitely give this one a read.

Silvio Toia hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
