8 Comics Outside Of Marvel And DC You Should Totally Check Out
1. Secret Path
If you ever find yourself looking for further proof of comics as their own legitimate art form, then look toward entry eight on this list. The Secret Path is not so much a comic in the traditional sense, but more of a multimedia art project that uses music, as well as the graphic novel format to depict one of the darkest moments in Canadian history.
The comic depicts the true story of Chanie Wenjack, a young Anishinaabe boy who died trying to return to his family after escaping the horrid conditions of the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Ontario, Canada.
The project contains a 10 song album written and performed by Gord Downie, each of the songs began as poems inspired by Chanie. The music is meant to be listened to alongside a 10 chapter graphic novel drawn by Jeffery Lemire.
The combination of Downie’s ambient music mixed with Lemire’s powerful art, work together to establish a tragic tone that effectively portrays the incidents this comic is based on. The Secret Path is meant to present the reality of what many indigenous people have had to face while also serving as a means of educating people on an event that most remain unaware of.
This is definitely a comic worth reading, and it is definitely story worth being told.
