8 Comics That Would Sell More If The Lead Character Was Replaced
4. Moon Knight
Moon Knight is another classic example of a character who comes off like an Ersatz version of another successful hero. Rich guy, no superpowers, uses his vast wealth to amass an arsenal of gadgetry while wearing a cape and fighting crime at night, has a teenage sidekick...sounds familiar. Marc Spector differs from Bruce Wayne in a few ways however. He is a former U.S. Marine. He is a little unstable mentally. He considers himself the earthly avatar of the Egyptian god Khonshu. The most important difference is that Moon Knight isn't selling comic books and merchandise hand over fist, the way Batman is. A little emotional turmoil, as seen with The Punisher, is intriguing. Moon Knight's multiple personalities and polarizing personality doesn't come across quite as charming. In 2014, Moon Knight was brought back in the Marvel NOW publications. If history sets any precedent, this new Moon Knight title will suffer the same fate as its predecessors. It's sad, really, because he has a lot going for him. He is a damaged, dark and serious character. He has weaknesses and flaws. He takes risks and is utterly dedicated to his cause. It's admirable...it just isn't selling books. Moon Knight doesn't necessarily need to change gender or race as some others have, but costume and story reboots haven't done the trick. It's time to up the risk and try a new night stalker.
