8 Comics That Would Sell More If The Lead Character Was Replaced
2. Silver Surfer
Like many other struggling characters, Silver Surfer is being given another shot as part of the Marvel NOW revamps. It might work, but history suggests that the surfer's independent titles have a pretty short shelf life. Unless Marvel is content with keeping the silver one relegated to supporting roles, something needs to be done to bring more appeal to the former herald of Galactus. Norrin Radd has been the Silver Surfer since his creation in 1966. Galactus, the world eater, imbued Radd with the "power cosmic" so that Radd could be his herald. The surfer eventually broke away from his master and teamed up with the likes of the Fantastic Four, Hulk, and the Sub-Mariner. Over the years he's been a little good, a little bad. His loyalties have wavered here and there and he has battle enemies both foreign and domestic. What he hasn't done is consistently keep a comic title afloat. The real risk with creating a new Silver Surfer is that Marvel would attempt to reach a younger demographic and create a cosmically-powered, neophyte street kid called "The Silver Skater". It's good to get with the times, but that's certainly not the way. While ethnocentrism is a hindrance for Aqua-Man, it might help to have an earth-based Silver Surfer who ventures out into the universe to do battle, but ultimately keeps home his or her priority.
