In Tales to Astonish #44, Janet van Dyne, AKA Wasp makes her first appearance as the daughter of a scientist trying to make contact with extra terrestrials. To get some help on his experiments, he turns to Hank Pym. It is here that Hank meets Janet. While their first meeting is brief, it must have left an impression on them both, because soon after Janet's father is killed by a mysterious gas her first call is to Hank.

Janet finds the body and is obviously in a very raw and emotional state. She calls to tell Hank of the news, but for some reason he thinks it's some sort of horrible joke. Seconds later his ants confirm the story he heads over to help. At least Pym's priorities are clear.

And what does he do once he arrives? Console her? Offer sympathies? No, of course not.

Wasp's father is dead and instead of being empathetic like a human being should, he asks her if she wants to get revenge by becoming a superhero. She readily agrees and the rest is history.
