It may come as a surprise to many that Ant-Man and Wasp are not a couple in comics nowadays. In fact, Wasp wasn't even Hank's first love.

Before Janet, Hank was married to a woman named Maria Trovaya. Maria was a political refugee from Hungary who escaped with her father to the United States. She and Hank fell in love and eventually got married. When the topic of their honeymoon came up, Maria expressed her longing for her native country.

To be fair, Hank expressed that he thought it was a terrible idea, but Maria was convinced. She believed that since she was now Maria Pym no one could possibly recognize her. Just a page later, she is kidnapped and killed off panel, which the comic then uses to explain why Hank has thrown himself into his work so furiously.

It is a sad backstory for Hank and even sadder for Maria. A strange footnote to it all is that later in that same issue Janet van Dyne appears and Hank immediately remarks on how similar she looks to Maria. It makes you think if their whole relationship was solely inspired by Pym's guilt over his deceased wife.
