8 Most Ridiculous Comic Book Gimmicks
5. Amalgam Comics
In 1996, Marvel and DC Comics combined their characters to create the Amalgam Universe. They mashed up two heroes or villains from their respective universes to create a new character that had traits from both. During their brief publication, Amalgam acted as though their characters had years of history behind them. The most popular from these stories was a Wolverine and Batman character, Dark Claw.
Dark Claw was the alias of Logan Wayne, a man who saw his family murdered before his very eyes and eventually ended up experimented on at the Weapon X program. This is one character with two completely seperate origins stories. He also wears an impossibly impractical and complicated costume, with inspiration from both Wolverine and Batman.
Taking different popular ideas and combining them together doesn't make for a more interesting concept. If anything, it dilutes what made these characters interesting in the first place.
When these comics were coming out, the comic book sales were in a freefall and publishers were desperate to try and boost their numbers. The same year that Amalgam Comics was created and ended, Marvel filed for bankruptcy.
