It’s amazing how much can change when you briefly step away from a character. For anyone who hasn’t been completely caught up on Superman, Rebirth is no doubt going to offer a massive shock.

The New 52 saw a vastly different Superman to the one we knew and while fans tolerated him, they still longed for the more experienced veteran from before the reboot. As a result of the outcry for the classic Superman, Convergence brought the pre-Flashpoint version of the character back into the chronology. This Clark was now married to Lois and raising a superpowered son named Jonathan in the Lois And Clark series. Keeping that continuity intact, there is now two different versions of Clark Kent flying around.

The new version of the character is still young and training to become the superhero he’s meant to be, whereas the classic Superman has become much more like Pa Kent, intent on caring for his family. These new Superman adventures are pretty emblematic of Rebirth as a whole: it’s both faithful to the character we know but clearly something different as well.
