8 Worst Things Doc Ock Has Ever Done To Spider-Man

7. Everything He Did In Spider-Man PS4

Spider Man PS4 Aunt May Dead
Insomniac

Now this may technically not be a comic book moment in the most literal sense, but how could anyone possibly ignore the climax to Insomniac Games' Spider-Man?

The studio opted to fashion a universe of their own when bringing the wall-crawler to current-gen systems, and it worked a treat. They told a brand-new Spidey story, replete with commentary on how Peter Parker has grown up over the years, and wrapped it up with a neat, little devastating blow that left gamers reaching for the nearest box of tissues.

What Insomniac's game did so well (at least, as far as storytelling is concerned), is that it tapped into the tragedy of Otto Octavius' fall. Much like in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, the studio opted to weave Peter's story directly into Otto's origins, going to great lengths to illustrate Spidey's admiration for Octavius, as well as his ignorance in failing to alert to his mentor's mental decline.

This is what makes Otto's inevitable downfall so downright heartbreaking, as players are left powerless to avert disaster. Unfortunately for everyone else, when Ock does take on his new, villainous persona, he unleashes a bioweapon on NYC that leaves thousands dead, including Aunt May herself. It was a moment no one saw coming, and easily made for one of Otto's most egregious offences.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
