Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Spider-Man burst onto the scene in the pages of 1962's Amazing Fantasy #15. He has since become one of the medium's most popular characters, outmatched only by two other figures.

No matter the decade, you can be sure that Peter Parker has taken a front seat in Marvel media. He's been the beneficiary of cartoon shows, live action TV series, games and movies aplenty, and shows no signs of stopping.

How so? Well a lot of Spidey's success can be attributed to just how genius a premise the character was. Peter Parker wasn't an alien from a faraway world, or a rich billionaire with limitless resources. He was just plain old Peter Parker, a high schooler from Queens bullied for his geekish demeanour and his book-smarts. He wasn't perfect, but that was the point, as Marvel's readers found themselves able to relate to Peter. They felt seen.

Over five decades later, it's little surprise Spider-Man remains one of the most successful comics ever put to print.
