2019 marks the Dark Knight's 80th birthday, and with 80 years of near-constant crimefighting, it's only natural that he'll have accrued a devoted following.

Batman's status as a preeminent superhero has seen him take a lead in the DC Universe for eight decades, but not only that, the character has also introduced dozens of iconic supporting characters too, each with a claim to be just as popular or recognised as the Caped Crusader himself.

Bruce Wayne first appeared in 1939's Detective Comics #27, and though the character has held down a recurring role in that comic, the release of Batman #1 in 1940 arguably brought with it DC's flagship series. Through thick or through thin, Batman has been one of the DCU's few constants - for better, or for worse.
