9 Bizarre Superhero Origins You Won't Believe Exist
7. Big Barda
Villains turned heroes are almost always interesting characters. As one of the loyal servants of Darkseid, Big Barda was basically the most evil, and so it's only natural that her heel turn makes her infinitely more interesting in the world of superhero backstories.
Darkseid's warriors are subject to practically endless torture, and while Barda doesn't appear to have totally forgotten this - having beaten Granny Goodness, the old Apokoliptian responsible for it, to death - it is as impressive as it is bizzare that, despite this mind-shattering abuse, Barda still ends up in one of the happiest and healthiest relationships in comic history. It shows that redemption is not beyond anyone, and goes far in proving how reformed from her past the Fury is.
That said, half the joy of Barda's origin story is that she is still clearly an Apokoliptian, and retains the headstrong and badass nature of a Fury leader despite turning to the good side - witty one-liners and all.
All things considered, any hero that goes from one of a major villain's loyal peons to a happily married superhero is one as strange as it is wonderful.
