5. Dark Nights: Metal
The Dark Nights: Metal crossover is fast becoming one of the most ambitious Batman stories ever to leave the gates of DC, and that's really saying something.
Scott Snyder and James Tynion are delivering a grand, cosmic mystery that will take familiar heroes into dark new territory and leave its mark on the DC Universe.
The story kicked off last month with Dark Days: The Forge #1, a prologue one-shot which sets the scene for the conflict with enough substance to have passed for the first core chapter, and this was followed by another prequel, Dark Days: The Casting.
Part horror movie, part epic superhero crossover these preludes established what's at stake in the issues to come, and makes it painstakingly clear why Bats will need his Justice League buddies by his side when taking on this particular threat.
It's impossible to read The Forge and The Casting without getting excited for Dark Nights: Metal, which gets underway for real next month.
