2. The Jim Gordon And Batman Relationship

While the likes of Robin and Batgirl may have all been "with" Batman for a long time, only Alfred Pennyworth's relationship with Bruce Wayne is as tenured as that of Jim Gordon.

These two men pulled Gotham City back from the brink after it almost drowned in a sea of corruption, organised crime and senseless violence. Although it has never been clear whether Gordon knew who the man under the mask was, the two share a bond of mutual trust and respect - one which breaks when Bruce leaves the "Mantle of the Bat" and protection of Gotham City to another.

Like Joker and Catwoman, Gordon knew almost instantly that this Batman wasn't "his" Batman, and this led to him questioning if he had been right to put so much faith in Bruce Wayne.

Azrael, for his part, tolerates Gordon as a means to an end, although he finds that he has more in common with the aggressive and antagonistic Harvey Bullock.

It would take many years for Bruce to regain Gordon's trust, although the fracture in their relationship would never truly heal.
