4. Daredevil: Out
Brian Michael Bendis' run is legendary. I'll go ahead and disappoint a few of you; Ed Brubaker's work will not be featured on this list. And it should be, as it's the perfect continuation of what's left off with Bendis, but I just didn't have room for it as a stand-alone. Bendis, of course, is working of Kevin Smith's departure, which features a Matt Murdock haunted by the loss of Karen Page. However, we get the most realistic interpretation of Daredevil in Bendis'
Out, as Matt Murdock's identity is revealed to the public and he must continue on in a constant media frenzy. He's badgered by paparazzi, all while attempting to hold court cases for his vigilante friends and attempting to remain a vigilante himself. It's an exhausting, fantastic, and intelligent read, offering something new that we never knew was lacking from the Daredevil mythos, even though it couldn't be more apparent: the law side. Daredevil is a hero who is superseded by the man under the mask. Matt Murdock is more important than Daredevil, and Bendis understood that. That's why Bendis' work is so effective and refreshing. It's why Brubaker had big shoes to fill. Ultimately, though, we were given a treat when Bendis passed the baton. What are you waiting for?
