The Dendermonde nursery attack took place in January 2009, at the Fabeltjesland daycare centre. As a result of the stabbing attack, three people died and twelve others were severely mutilated. The attack began when Kim De Gelder, a 20-year-old from Sinaai, entered the nursery and claimed to have a question to ask. He then went on to attack a number of small children, along with the minders there. Two of the dead victims were aged just nine months old, and many of the survivors required plastic surgery after the attack. De Gelder was allegedly dressed as the Joker during the attacks, and quoted The Dark Knight throughout. Shortly after being captured, De Gelder mocked his interrogators and gave five different identities.
