9 Most Messed Up Things Spider-Man Has Ever Done

1. Sacrificing His Marriage - One More Day

Yes, yes, yes, One More Day is a story that's been covered to death from every possible angle, and while we're trying not to be too repetitive here, we simply couldn't do this sort of article and not touch upon J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada's 2007 tale.

To this day, the mere mention of the words One More Day will send a cold shiver down the spines of so many true believers, with it being one of the most stupid, ridiculous, and outright awful Spider-Man stories that ever made it to print.

Coming off the back of the first Civil War arc - which saw Spidey publicly unmask and reveal that he was Peter Parker - One More Day had Peter make a deal with the literal devil of the Marvel Comics realm. That devil would be Mephisto, and Parker would agree for his marriage to Mary Jane to be wiped from history in order for Mephisto to save Aunt May's life and erase the world's knowledge that Peter and Spider-Man were one and the same.

Seeing Peter and MJ opting to scrap their marriage in this way felt disrespectful to these characters, it felt like a hideous back-step to get out of a problem caused by Civil War, and it made Spider-Man seem utterly selfish.

Adding salt to the wounds, after this deal is agreed, Mephisto shows Peter and MJ the daughter that they would've had should they have stayed together in the worst "here's what you could've won!" twist ever.

Senior Writer

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
